点评:Having wanted to visit here for a long time, I was not disappointed! This place is very special indeed. Too many good features to list here, but what topped it off for me was the warm welcome, kindness and generosity of the staff and volunteers. These ladies and gentlemen are for me the jewel in the National Trust's crown. I was made to feel at home, not in any way hurried (I like to read every label at every exhibit!) and no less than three of the volunteers spent time sharing their (very considerable) knowledge and, most of all, their devotion to the great composer.
The garden has been restored to the very same layout the Elgar family would have known (witnessed by the drawing made at the time, a copy of which is in the summerhouse) and it is a truly exquisite English cottage garden. The visitor centre makes excellent use of the space, without taking away at all from the birthplace itself, being the other side of the narrow public bridleway which cuts through the small estate.
Elgar lived in so many different homes, but this was where he humbly asked to be remembered, and the place, the quality of the exhibiting and, most of all, the staff and volunteers, in my experience have come together to make it possible to feel somehow close to the humble son of Broadheath, who grew up to become arguably England's greatest composer.
Thank you to those who made this a wonderful visit.
Highly recommended!
