点评:Rather than visit more Scottish Castles, one day we decided to explore the outdoors. We caught the ferry across the Clyde from Gourock, on the Glasgow side, to Dunoon, and then drove up into the hills on the Cowal peninsula. Benmore is only a few miles inland. It is part of the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens and specialises in phytogeographic planting, maintaining several areas with plants and trees specific to particular areas and habitats around the world. Many of the plants are endangered in their home ranges, so are being preserved here. A lot seem to be Rhododendrons!
Of particular note are the 160-year-old Redwoods in Redwood Avenue, but there are other giant Douglas Firs and Scots Pines here.
There is a Visitor Centre on-site, with friendly and knowledgeable staff, where you can buy souvenirs and tickets, and also a café with locally-produced ice creams. Parking is free, but there is limited space.
