点评:We had booked tickets, back in April for the 11:51 train from Settle to Carlisle, returning at 16:17. We had the first hint of a potential problem, when we pulled into the station car park and found 2 coaches full of people sitting there. There were 80 plus people from the coaches plus a sizeable number of independent travellers. You must also take into account that this train started from Leeds and picked up many passengers before reaching Settle.
You would expect that given the number of ticket sales and the fact that a train carriage seats less 70 passengers; that the powers that be, would have had the common sense to put a minimum of 4 carriages on the train. What a fiasco when the already fairly full 2 carriage train arrived. Every seat soon became taken and all the isles and doorways were a seething mass of wall to wall people. Being unable to stand for 90 minutes, we had no other choice but to either leave it altogether or wait for the next train at 14:20. We chose the latter but as a large number of people also made the same choice, there was almost the same problem when the 3 carriages of the next train turned up.
It is a great railway line with some fantastic scenery and pretty stations and it is clearly still very popular. It is a shame that this is marred, particularly in it's 150th year, by someone who is clearly incapable of doing their jobs properly. After all, it is a simple enough calculation to make.
