点评:The Stoa of Eumenes is one of the minor sights on the Acropolis grounds. If like us, you enter through the south gate, it is one of the earlier sights and is located between the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
What you see here are the remains of a typical stoa - a long, narrow, free-standing building with a façade of columns. Built by Eumenes II, King of Pergamum (197–159 BC), it provided a sheltered area where theatre-goers could stroll during intermission.
Originally, it was an imposing two-floor building, 163 m long with a double colonnade. The outer row consisted of 64 Doric columns and the inner row had 32 columns but these no longer exist.
You don’t have to go out of your way to see it as both the Theatre and the Odeon are must-see sights so you will pass by the Stoa on the way.
TICKET TIP: I’d highly recommend buying the combo ticket. At €30, it is excellent value. It lasts for 5 days and includes entry to 7 ancient sites. Entry to the Acropolis on its own is €20 so if it is your first time to Athens, it makes sense to buy this ticket (unless you’re here in winter when many sites are half price).
