点评:Last went about 20 years ago with my daughters - a great museum then that my daughters still remember. This recent visit was with 11 and 6 year old grandsons. What a disappointment.
The positives: this Victorian building has been beautifully renovated. Some of the old exhibits are still there ( e.g. ‘disease street’, the surgery ‘theatre’, and lots of surgical instruments and devices (though mostly still in the same (now rather dated) display cases I think.) A few things were just parked in a corridor, with minimal signage - e.g. the iron lung machines .
The negatives: looks like money has been splashed on a newly curated display area (the first you go in to), brightly illustrated with lots of coloured plastic. It is dedicated to poo. I think it is supposed to capture the imagination of kids. Failed miserably with my two grandsons, despite my efforts. There is a further bright plastic exhibition board about poo on the top floor - why? There is also a lot of ‘woke’ throughout the museum e.g. climate change gets a room of its own, sexual health has an animated video with trans topics and using trans vocabulary (aubergines anyone?), a room lauding the NHS with banners about how the NHS has saved the lives of mothers in childbirth (apparently missing the irony of the current investigation into maternity services in Leeds), and a quote from the first Leeds Pride March, in large lettering, in a wall display about other topics. I didn’t bring my grandsons to the museum to be indoctrinated about these topics.
On arrival we were informed the museum is ‘pay as you’ feel, but that it operates as a charity and the recommended payment is £12 per person. So we paid £48. On top of £2 per hour parking. Good value? Nope.
