点评:You can find this fountain in the Piccadilly Circus. It was built in 1893 to honour The Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury. Lord Ashley was a 19th century politician, social reformer and philanthropist who made great achievements in altering the Victorian child labour policies and in making school education mandatory for these children. He was so well loved by the people of London that they named this fountain and a main avenue after him. This fountain was moved twice during its lifetime. It is very wrongly nicknamed Eros, because people mistakenly believe that the winged statue, on top of the fountain, is that of the Greek God of love. In reality sculptor Alfred Gilbert crafted Anteros, the God of requited love to reflect the Earl’s selfless nature. This fountain is one of the most photographed spots in London.
