点评:This afternoon we visited Elvaston Castle Country Park, and what a splendid day we had!
We went as a family and absolutely loved it.
Entry to the park is free, which is fantastic. Parking is £3.50 for a half day or £7 for a full day, while disabled parking is free.
The castle, surrounding buildings and clock tower are absolutely gorgeous. We didn't go inside the castle, but the outside is spectacular, with beautiful old buildings, gates and some truly magnificent gardens.
There are so many different species of trees, and many have grown in such fascinating shapes and forms.
There is a small shop and café, with plenty of seating, picnic areas and large grassy spaces where you can sit and enjoy the surroundings.
Dogs are welcome too, provided you clean up after them. There are streams running through the park where people were paddling, and the dogs were having a wonderful time in the water as well!
The lake was beautiful, with swans and ducks, and there was even a private event taking place which looked like a medieval camping event. It was roped off, but we could have a little peek and could hear the music, which added to the atmosphere.
For anyone with mobility difficulties, I would highly recommend Elvaston. It is very accessible with an electric wheelchair or mobility scooter, and you can also hire a Tramper. You leave a £20 deposit, the first hour is free and then it's £9.50 after that. We had ours for about an hour and a half and were only charged £4.50, which I thought was excellent value. It would be a little bumpy in places for a manual wheelchair however someone managed to do it 👏.
The gentleman who showed me how to use the Tramper was absolutely brilliant. I've used one before, but he gave me a really thorough induction and explained everything clearly. It was honestly the best Tramper induction I've ever had.
There were large groups, families and individuals enjoying the park, but there is so much space that it never felt overcrowded. We walked for a good two hours — well, I travelled around on the Tramper! 😄 — and probably explored about half of the park.
We could easily have stayed much longer, but we'd set off quite late and needed to return the Tramper by 4pm. If you're planning a visit, I'd recommend allowing at least three or four hours so you don't feel rushed.
You can contact Elvaston directly or book a Tramper through the Derbyshire County Council website.
All in all, it was a really lovely day out, and we would highly recommend Elvaston Castle Country Park. Beautiful scenery, fascinating history, lovely walks, very accessible, dog-friendly and fantastic value for money.
We'll definitely be going back. ❤️
Nb read about the history of the house and gardens. Most interesting.
