点评:In some ways, Valles Caldera does deserve to be better known. On the other hand, I have been to Yellowstone and I prefer amazing places nobody knows about.
The ranger told us the teenage elk bring the calves down from the forest in the morning to graze (acreage between the movie cabin and the cabin district). We were not disappointed. Looked like 50 or so grazing from I don’t know when til about 9:30 or 10. Then we got to see the older ones lead them all single file (!) back up into the forest. Amazing. I wish we could get closer, there is not a trail close by. Going to try again on this trip.
Also, I understand elk were extinct in New Mexico from overhunting. Some visionary re-introduced 40 of them from Colorado, years ago, and they are replenishing nicely.
