点评:As one explores the Delphi Archeological site, which basically means a steady uphill climb from the entrance, one of the first large structures one comes to is the Treasury of the Athenians also known as the Athenian Treasury.
This marble building is one of the few in the site that is almost completely intact. In fact it appears almost the same as when it was built, a testament to the builders.
The Treasury was constructed sometime 510 and 480 BC the exact dates being in some dispute. It was constructed by the Athenians to house offerings to the God Apollo whose Temple is nearby. Some accounts suggest that the cost to construct it came from the spoils of the battle of Marathon in 490 BC. This is supported by an inscription dedicating the building to Apollo by the Athenians in appreciation for their victory at Marathon. It was only one of several depositories built by the various Greek City Sates at Delphi, but it is the only remaining example.
The treasury was constructed of marble, and the front contains antae or pillars framing two doric columns. The building also boasts some thirty metopes or frescos depicting various scenes of significance. Prominent amongst these are depictions of the battle of Marathon and the various feats of Hercules. Six of these survive and are presently in the nearby Delphi museum with replicas replacing them on the site.
The Treasury was excavated between 1903 and 1906 and some reconstruction and renovation work completed, although as noted that the original building was still intact and in reasonably good condition.
Entrance is included in admission to the Delphi Archeological Site as a whole which is usually 20 Euros with reductions for seniors, school groups and children and some free admission days The site is open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and due to being on a hillside with steep narrow paths and steps is not recommended for those with mobility issues.
