We booked Jersey Girl specifically for a 4th of July trip during the special 250th anniversary celebration of the United States. The trip was canceled due to weather, which of course we understand was outside of their control. What I absolutely do not understand or agree with is their decision to keep 25% of our money for a trip that THEY canceled and never provided.
Yes, their fine print apparently states that weather cancellations are only refunded at 75%. But this wasn’t an ordinary boat trip that could simply be rescheduled for another weekend. We booked specifically for the July 4th experience. Once July 4th passed, there was no equivalent trip to reschedule.
Keeping 25% of a customer’s payment when the business provided no service whatsoever feels incredibly unfair and, in my opinion, deceptive—especially for a special-event booking tied to one specific date.
I understand that weather is a risk when operating a boat. But that is a risk of operating this type of business; I don’t believe customers should be expected to pay hundreds of dollars toward an experience the company ultimately could not provide.
Thankfully, our 4th of July wasn’t ruined. We were able to book with SeaStreak, a much larger vessel, and still enjoy the special 250th anniversary July 4th celebration. That made Jersey Girl’s decision to keep 25% of our payment for an experience they never provided even more frustrating.
I would strongly caution anyone considering booking Jersey Girl to read every line of their cancellation policy before handing over your money. I certainly wish we had understood that if they canceled our special-event trip, we could still lose 25% of what we paid.
A full refund would have been the fair and customer-friendly thing to do. Instead, this policy has ensured that we will never book with Jersey Girl again.
