点评：A memorable stay with some important areas for improvement
We recently stayed at the Lizzie Borden House in the Andrew and Abbey Suite. The experience was certainly memorable, and there were several things we appreciated, but there are also some areas where we feel improvements would significantly enhance the overnight guest experience.
One of our biggest concerns was the lack of a welcoming presence when we arrived. When we entered the house, there were employees in the kitchen who saw us come in but did not acknowledge or greet us. Having a host or staff member available in the evening to welcome overnight guests would make the experience feel much more hospitable and reassuring, particularly given the location and the fact that guests may be arriving with luggage after dark.
Parking was another challenge. The parking lot is quite small and cramped, and it would be helpful if the limited spaces were prioritized for overnight guests staying in the Borden House. Tour employees and tour guests could potentially be directed to nearby street parking, leaving the lot available for guests arriving and departing with luggage. This would be especially helpful for guests arriving at night.
Unfortunately, we also had a significant security concern with our room door. The lock was not functioning properly. Staff attempted to add a chain lock, but it was still very easy to open the door. We ultimately had to improvise with a backpack strap to make sure the door stayed closed. Despite this, multiple people attempted to open our door the following morning before our 10:00 a.m. checkout. We have photos of the door and the setup that we can provide. When we brought the issue to a staff member’s attention, we were told not to worry because there had never been an issue with guests’ belongings being taken. While we appreciated the reassurance, we feel that a properly functioning and secure door should be a basic priority for an overnight accommodation.
We were also disappointed by the amount of noise and activity from the tours while we were staying overnight. The website indicates that ghost tours are supposed to remain in the basement in order to provide overnight guests with quiet time. During our stay, however, multiple tours were moving throughout the house, creating considerable noise and disruption. This made it difficult to enjoy the overnight experience we had expected.
That said, our morning tour with Sam was absolutely exceptional and was the highlight of our visit. Sam was an excellent guide, knowledgeable and engaging, and made the history of the house fascinating. However, the tour group was approximately 25 people, which felt far too large for the space. Even after around 10 guests left because they were not participating in the basement portion, the remaining group was still too large. At times, not everyone could even fit into the room where Sam was speaking. Limiting tour group sizes would make the experience considerably more comfortable and would allow guests to hear and engage with the guide more easily.
We do want to acknowledge some positive changes we noticed after reading previous reviews. Our breakfast was served on time, which we appreciated. The check-in and checkout times were also clearly communicated, with check-in around 5:30 p.m. and checkout around 10:00 a.m. Since we stayed only one night, these times worked reasonably well for us. We recognize that guests staying multiple nights may have a more difficult experience given the tour schedule and limited access to their rooms during the day.
Overall, we had an interesting and memorable experience, but we feel the property is trying to serve two very different purposes: an overnight bed-and-breakfast experience and a busy historical/ghost-tour attraction. Based on our experience, it seems difficult to provide a comfortable overnight stay while simultaneously accommodating large numbers of daytime and evening tour guests.
We hope management considers creating a clearer separation between the overnight guests and tour operations. Having an evening host, ensuring all guest-room locks are fully functional, prioritizing parking for overnight guests, enforcing quiet areas/times, and reducing tour group sizes would make a significant difference.
