点评:Incredibly overpriced, especially for the quality of produce and meat. As another user commented, rotten produce abounds, and the rotten spots are conveniently covered with pricing labels so they're unnoticeable until you've driven 20 minutes home. Meat has often been thawed and refrozen; plenty of rainbow meat beneath the visible packaged surface. Our family's been sick from this twice, so we stopped buying meat there.
Mālama Market claims to be for locals, but it's a Whole Foods-priced, "curated" grocery store in the poorest district of Hawai'i. I think the "locals" they cater to are the wealthier gentrifiers buying up land in Puna. The old Mālama Market was so much better. This one's all style and no substance. For produce and eggs, hit the farmers' markets. For local meat, Waimea Butcher is where it's at: roughly the same prices for much better quality, but it's a long (beautiful) drive from Pāhoa. For hardware and home needs, there's a local Ace Hardware down the road, just by the old Mālama Market building.
Mālama's staff is generally kind, and some of them are pretty fantastic: very open, neighborly people like we remember from the old Mālama Market. They're the only reason the new Mālama gets any stars at all, and they deserve raises to living wages ($25/hr in Hawai'i).
