Stunning cathedral - do the ‘Porta del Cielo’ but beware queues for the Duomo Nuovo

点评：The Old Cathedral is stunning, and is a must see in Siena. We purchased tickets online at the official website, and included the “Porta Del Cielo” (Gate of Heaven) walk in our ticket. We would definitely recommend doing this - it will only be available until 2027 as things stand, so worth taking the opportunity to ascend above the crowds of tourists for spectacular views of decorations/statues you barely notice from below. The walk also goes outside onto the roof of the cathedral, giving yet another perspective of this fabulous building. Note it isn’t a “guided tour” in the strict sense of the word - guides accompany you and do give some information, but are mainly there from a safety/security perspective - taking in the inner and outside views is the main reason to go!
Our ticket also included the Piccolomini Library (beautiful) and the cathedral itself, plus the museum and the Duomo Nuovo. Beware : at busy times the queue to climb the Duomo Nuovo can be long, and the rough queue times you are given outside are only to get inside the museum - once inside you can look around the exhibits before climbing the stairs to access the Duomo Nuovo but …… there is another queue here (for obvious reasons the number of people allowed on the wall at any one time are restricted) - so you wait again. In total we queued for over an hour (about 45 mins outside and 30 mins inside) - the views are spectacular once you make it but do make sure you allow time if planning to do this.
