点评:I can see so many reviews cover the breathtaking interior, incredible floors and amazing Piccholomini Library, so I want to praise the cathedral's uniqueness from the ARCHITECTURAL point of view because it is a really special structure in terms of it's history:
1) The unorthodox solution with attaching the Baptistery to the main building: there was not enough space for it on the hill, so they created the baptistery UNDER the main Duomo, with the separate entrance. This way it also functions as a supporting structure.
2) Another unique feature is that, climbing to the unfinished tall arch across the square you can appreciate how they had planned to enlarge the church to the enormous size (some say - to compete with Florence), with the current cathedral playing the future role of the transept for a gigantic new one. From above, one can see the arches of the nave which was never built, and guess: if it was finished, would it be an amazing religious structure or some monstrosity out of any proportions ))
3) The panorama of the town from the unfinished toll arch is one of the best bird views in all Tuscany.
