点评:We visited Koblenz as a part of a Viking Rhine Cruise, so we docked on the Rhine at the German Corner directly opposite the fortress. We got great views and pictures of the fortress which dates from the 1834 rebuild. Ironically, while at the center of 17th and 18th Century conflicts between France and Prussia, it has never seen a surface attack in its history which spans the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, WWI in 1914-18 and WWII in the 1940s.
With the commanding heights above the Rhine and Moselle Rivers and its direct location between France and Germany, it is the perfect defensive location for a region that has experience significant conflict between these two countries. The first fortress here was destroyed by the retreating French in 1801 and what you will see today has evolved since 1834. We did take the cable car to the fortresses entrance but did not enter as we were short on time. However, we really enjoyed seeing it across the river.
