Great experiences on both the half day birdwatching and whalewatching tours.
Madeira Wind Birds的点评
点评：While in Madeira at the start of September 2025, we booked two tours with Madeira Wind Birds - the half day birdwatching tour, and the whale watching tour. To save the trouble of reading on, both were excellent and well worth the money.
The birdwatching tour began with us being collected from a spot that was easy to reach and had free parking (they offer hotel pick ups from the major towns but we had a rental car and were staying in an Airbnb a bit outside Funchal). The company van was spacious and modern, and we were immediately struck by how knowledgeable and passionate our host, Hugo, was about Madeiran flora and fauna. On a tour of three different locations, we spotted every species we set out to see, including three endemics, with a bonus Peregrine Falcon as well. This included the Madeiran Firecrest, Madeiran Chaffinch, Trocaz Pigeon, Berthelot's Pipit, and Spectacled Warbler. We learned so much about Madeira and the birds, and would not hesitate to recommend this tour.
The next day, we headed to Machico for the whale watching trip aboard the company's excellent rigid inflatable, the Oceanodroma. We were both a little nervous about seasickness, but took a seasickness tablet beforehand. We needn't have worried, as the boat was piloted expertly and was very good at absorbing the waves. The trip itself was incredible - we had excellent sights of seabirds including Cory's Shearwater, Bulwer's Petrel, and Fea's/Desertas Petrel, and saw Short-finned Pilot Whales and Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, which had a great time playing around the boat. I would have happily gone out again the next day, if we'd had the time.
I thoroughly recommend both these experiences, and the only disappointment was that we were there at the wrong time of the year to do the mountain trip to hear Zino's Petrel returning to their roosts at night.
