点评:Every year, for my birthday I treat myself to a horseback riding trip in a new country. This year, with Hipparion ranch was a disaster.
Hipparion Ranch's website looks like an adventurer's paradise: rustic cabins, breathtaking views, horses, and a remote location. And it really is beautiful! The problem isn't the scenery. It's the misleading descriptions, absent owners, and the way you're treated if you dare to question anything.
It took me over two days of traveling to reach this remote corner of Transylvania. Upon arrival, a volunteer showed me to my accommodation. To my absolute shock, instead of the cozy cabins pictured on the website, I was taken to what looked like an army barracks: mattresses on wooden platforms, separated by planks, in a room shared with 2 strangers.
I understand this is a remote ranch. Shared bathrooms, basic facilities, even having to burn wood in a stove to get hot water for a shower — that's all part of the adventure! But I wasn't prepared to sleep on a mattress with strangers.
My big mistake? Expressing my surprise to the volunteers.
I actually embraced it. I'd traveled halfway across the world for my birthday riding adventure, and I wasn't going to let the sleeping arrangements ruin it. I was going to enjoy this tour!
The next morning, I get a message from Katherine, the entitled and absent owner, saying I was a THREAT TO THE ENTIRE GROUP'S SAFETY, that my "high demands" were overworking her volunteers she cared so much about, that she didn't like my "bad vibe," and that she would arrange my transfer out of the ranch THAT DAY.
I was in the middle of nowhere in Transylvania, with my flight home three days away, being told to leave before my very first ride. Because I questioned the accommodation that looked different on the website.
No attempt to find a solution to this misunderstanding. There were six of us, and another group of ten was leaving that day. Surely something could have been worked out? Thank God my issue was just not wanting to sleep on a mattress in a room for 4, and not something genuinely serious. If the owner's response to a guest questioning an unexpected accommodation is to tell them to leave, imagine how she'd handle an actual emergency.
And here's where I was an idiot: I actually convinced Katherine to let me stay. I assured her I'd made peace with sleeping on a mattress in a room full of strangers, which was true, and promised I wouldn't leave a negative review. And I genuinely had no intention of doing so.
Until I discovered that the accommodation wasn't even the biggest misrepresentation. I'd been sold an entirely different type of riding experience, despite repeatedly asking Katherine exactly what kind of riding to expect.
I took an hour ride from the ranch, then a three-hour taxi ride to Brașov and spent the next two days there waiting for my flight home. Quite the birthday adventure!
And you know what? I'd rather spend my birthday stranded in Brașov than stay at a ranch run by someone who, treats guests with such arrogance and hostility — without even being there in person. And the tour was absolutely not what was advertised.
