点评:I have mixed feelings about our visit to Bibury. On the one hand, it is a very beautiful, little village and is home to the famous Arlington Row terrace houses.
On the other hand, it is absolutely overwhelmed by tourists and traffic in numbers which are completely inappropriate for a place the size of Bibury.
We started to have reservations when we hit the long queue of cars, snaking its way slowly towards the village. It was impossible to park in the village and in the end we parked up near The Catherine Wheel inn and walked back down into the village centre. This worked well because parking was free and we enjoyed having a drink in The Catherine Wheel afterwards.
You don’t have to allocate much time to seeing Bibury. You will easily see everything within an hour.
Bibury’s fame rests almost entirely on the Arlington Row, a picturesque terrace row of weavers' cottages. Built around 1380, it was originally a wool store for the local monastery but was converted to cottages in the 17th century.
It really is very, very scenic and often appears right at the top of any ‘most photographed spots in the UK’ list. However don’t expect to get a photograph without having lots of other people in the background. You’d have to be arrive at some ungodly hour of the morning to get a photo without others in it.
The other main sights in Bibury are the river Coln and the 11th century St Mary’s Church.
If you want to make more of your visit, then you can go to the Trout Farm. We didn’t. It was £9 per adult and we had limited interest.
Instead we ambled alongside the river with its small, stone bridges, we took some more photos, we visited the church and then we went on our way.
I’d recommend visiting Bibury if you’re staying nearby. We were staying at Lechlade so for us it was easy. We did a lovely, looped drive, starting at Lechlade then stopping at Burford, Bibury, and Fairford before heading back to Lechlade.
