点评:Family has been on multiple safaris with Bearded Heron over the years and were finally able to go on a 10-day safari. Family set very high expectations and I will say Bearded Heron surpassed those expectations. We had a wonderful time in South Africa.
Tina, who runs the entire office side, did a fantastic job arranging everything in country for us. We simply had to arrange our flights to and from the USA.
Johannesburg: A driver met us at the airport, helped with baggage, and took us to where we were staying, Golfers Lodge. What a great place to start our trip. Luiza, the owner, is caring and energetic. Our room was spacious and clean with a small kitchen area. Luiza also made sure we had a fresh breakfast every morning. Wonderful grounds that are well landscaped and maintained. It was like Luiza adopted us from the moment we arrived. We talked about food, discussed dinner options, and she steered us in the right direction. Fahrenheit, O Peri Peri, and Banjaara, were all great and each presented different styles of food. We had three full days of tours: an overview of the city including Soweto, the Cradle of Humanity, and a day of art, food, and human origins. We were on private tours each day with a guide who drove or a guide and a driver. Johannesburg can change very quickly from one block to another, so you want to go on guided tours rather than walking on your own. Our guides Nthatho and Howard were great. They were deep wells of knowledge and enjoyed sharing Johannesburg and the Cradle of Humankind with us. Three days of tours worked well for us.
Tina and a travel agent she works with, Owain, helped book our in-country flights. Drivers got us to and from each airport.
Neil, Roan, and Jack (Neil's son, who did a working safari while on break between university classes) met us at the gate to Kruger National Park. They loaded our bags in the support truck, we loaded in the safari vehicle, and the safari started as soon as immediately. Have what you want to wear, camera, etc. in a convenient location that is ready and easy to grab. We really enjoyed our time with Neil, Roan, and Jack. The safari was everything we heard about from family and more. That's because of the three of them. They're good people to spend time with. We were in the northern half of the Kruger and after our safari we met some South Africans who were very impressed with the area we covered and the camps we stayed in. The common comment was that we "did it right." High praise from people who said they visited often. I have a little over 1200 photos and videos form our 10 days. We spent most of our time on the hard-pack dirt roads and there were times we went hours without seeing any other vehicles. That's the good part of going to the northern half of the park. People stopped to talk with Neil and commonly asked about lions or leopards, all while missing a chance to watch three generations of young elephants while they interact. Seeing baby baboons and their troop. The 500+ varieties of birds. Zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffes, warthogs, jackals, and even mongoose that don't care bout you as they go about business as usual was wonderful. I didn't get tired of it. Yes, seeing lions and cheetahs in the wild great too, but my inner child just enjoyed all the wildlife interactions. With that said, in the bush you can go from Km/miles and not see any wildlife, but keep your head in the game and keep watching. You might be the one that spots something great. Neil has to balance watching around the vehicle, looking for tracks, and safely driving.
Roan was our bush chef and handled our in camp needs. He situated our bags in our cottages and made sure we had plenty of bottled water. He's also just a nice person to spend time with. Roan is a key element of having a good camp experience. Jack was just along for this trip, so he pitched in at camp and was an extra spotter during several game drives. Learning about South Africa beyond the Kruger from Neil, Roan, and Jack and just talking together was time well spent.
Our Kruger Safari with Neil, Roan, and Jack was a bucket-list lifetime event. I've already recommended that other family reach out to Bearded Heron.
All good and wonderful things have to come to an end, so our driver met us at our last camp and took us to the airport. We continued on to Cape Town. Our initial guide, Tobie, met us at the airport and took us to our hotel, Cloud 9, in an area known as the Kloof. Our hotel, Cloud 9, is a boutique hotel, a wonderful value, and a great location. We were supposed to be with Tobie every day, but an unexpected issue changed those plans. We had John one day and then Sean the remaining 5 days. All of our guides were delightful. Again, just the guide and us. Again, the guides were all very knowledgeable and engaging. We booked more days in Cape Town and spread things out. We're glad we did. It meant we were able to flex our schedule if we needed to adjust for the weather. It also meant we were able to stop at the 12 Apostles Hotel and enjoy a cup of rooibos tea on the balcony while overlooking the ocean. Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulder Penguin Colony, the different wine areas, Hermanus, Robben Island, and so much more to see. Cape Town is a great destination for food too and walking distance in the Kloof. We had a Michelin star quality meal at Upper Union and it was affordable for us. We found that the small plates at several restaurants were a great way for us to have dinner. We tried more options and didn't have the leftovers. We wish we had more time to explore more of South Africa.
Using Bearded Heron to book everything was a wise decision on our part. Tina listened to what we were looking for and set everything up. She has a strong working relationship with the guides and they know each other. She has an expectation that the guides would be a great fit for us and they were just that and more. Yet, she still checked in with us once in a while just to be sure all was okay. That's client service that's hard to find. South Africa has embraced tourism as a major part of their economy and it was evident. We felt like we were genuinely welcomed everywhere we went and I'm not being naive about it.
Neil、Roan 和 Jack(Neil 的儿子,在大学假期期间参加过一次野生动物园工作)在克鲁格国家公园门口迎接我们。
