西班牙台阶的点评
点评：An 18th century artistic way to provide a way to climb the steep slope of 30 meters height from the spanish square with the Bernini boat fountain to the french church of Trinite-des-monts situated over the Pincio hill.
The 135 steps stairway is composed of 11 ramps of 12 steps each, and balustrades connecting between them in a butterfly-like shape and giving way to relaxation and enjoyment.
The stairs may be considered a Roman bridge between the French and the Spanish presences in the city. Ironically it is called spanish yet it was paid by the french, mastered by an italian!
The status of the stairs required several restoration processes and the stairs faced some nasty incidents including cars descending the stairs, which caused even more troubles. The authorities are taking strict measures including the prohibition of eating and drinking on the stairs or causing any harm to them with severe fines for any miss-conduct.
The stairs are still considered a romantic place especially for tourists, and they are sometimes filled with azalias for a few weeks in spring and they appeared in many famous movies and video clips. Also the house where the english poet Keats spent his last years, now turned into a museum, is right beside the stairs.
The square itself takes the form of 2 triangles meeting at the summits where there is also the column of the Immaculate Conception, a roman column with a bronze statue of the Virgin on top dating from the 19th century.
