点评:So our first day in Rome we headed to the Pantheon — and didn't realize until we got there that entry was completely free. April 25th, Rome Liberation Day, came through for us again.
And honestly? I was not prepared for how breathtaking this place actually is.
The Pantheon is one of those buildings that makes you stop and just *stare*. That hole in the center of the ceiling the oculus is iconic, but what really got me was learning that when it rains, the water actually drains out through the floor. The building was literally engineered to handle it. In ancient times. Without modern tools. Nobody fully knows how they built this thing, and the wild part is they refuse to take it apart to figure it out. So it just remains one of history's great mysteries and honestly that makes it even cooler.
Oh and Raphael yes, *the* Raphael, one of the most famous painters in history is buried inside. Just casually. In there with everybody walking around taking photos.
The fact that they still hold Sunday mass here makes it even more surreal. This isn't just a museum piece, it's a living, breathing building that has been in use for nearly 2,000 years.
If you get the chance to visit, go. And travel smarter the first Sunday of every month a lot of historical sites in Rome are free, and certain holidays like April 25th open things up too. Check the calendar before your trip, save your money, and let Rome do the rest.
