点评:We are a family from Denmark living in Switzerland with 2 children being 12 and 15 years old. We were looking for an extended family holiday trip in southern Africa before the kids are starting to go on holidays without mom and dad. I used to live in South Africa 30 years ago and wanted to share some things, the rest of the family never has seen before. The problem is how to find a serious company that would meet all our expectations. A danish friend of mine heard about our plans and recommended Dusty Foot Tours Namibia, since he just came back from a tour he made with them 6 months before, mentioning that one of the partners, Svend, is half danish and half namibian and therefore used to both cultures and a lot of namibian insight knowledge.
After we made contact where we told a little bit about our expectations, the time and money we are able to spend and the things, that were most important for us to see.
A couple of days later, we were supplied with a suggested tour plan, including the cities, the area and the sites where we would stay during our trip. We had the opportunity to google the places and in most cases we could choose between a couple of options where to stay or what to do.
After we agreed on our very personal holiday trip, the company sent an invoice, and we had to wire the money to Namibia. Unfortunately, they do not accept credit cards. Felt a little special to send a lot of money to a company in Africa, but since our friend told us, they were a serious company and we shouldn't be worried, we were fine with that.
After we arrived at the airport in Namibia, we were met by Svend, who even fixed a lot of paper work for us in advance, so that we were one of the first ones, who could get through immigration.
The first night we slept in a very nice hotel in Windhoek, since we arrived too late to reach our first site according to our travel plan.
We were travelling in a relatively large and spacious safari 4-WD car with air condition and a fridge for cold drinks and snacks. We travelled as a private family group together with Svend and there was never a moment where we felt that we were never left alone. It was always very giving and interesting to talk with Svend about culture, wildlife, politics and economy on our sometimes very long trips on the road. But there were always enough moments, where everybody was just listening to music, reading a book or having a short nap instead of socialising.
The sites where we stayed were in most cases either a small hotel or (much, much better) a lodge, usually in the middle of nature. Some of them were very, very nice and luxurious, but that is of course dependent on what you agreed on when planning the tour. We asked for a mid-upper range of comfort and there was not any place, where we were really disappointed. We trusted mostly in Svends choice and he always met our expectations.
We saw a lot of Namibia (Namib Naukluft, Sossusvlei / Deadvlei (in the mid of the desert), Walvis Bay (Gocart Racing), Swakopmund, Otjiwarongo, Etosha (a must see is the Onguma Lodge (we stayed at the Fort), which is probably pricy, but really, really nice!!). We drove towards east on the Caprivia strip towards Zimbabwe, weher we wanted to see the Victoria Falls. Do not underestimate the length of the driving tours, sometimes 5-7 hours on the road. If we had more time, I wish we would have stayed longer at the different lodges instead of only one or two nights. Vic Falls were nice, although we were accompagnied by an external contractor instead of Svend, since it would have been to time consuming to get the car over the border and back on one day. We travelled back through Botswana, stayed again in some nice places and reached on day 18 the airport in Windhoek.
We saw tons of wild animals like elephants, zebras, leopards, hippos, eagles, lions, snakes, springboks, kudu and all kinds of other antilopes. We do really recommend to take a horse back safari tour, since it is much more quiet than drivin in a car and you get so much closer to the animals, since they obviously cannot distinguish between a horse with and without men. You can get so close that you can almost touch them (not the predators, of course)! And you do not have to have any horse back riding skills or experience...
We can also recommend to try out the helicopter flight over the Okavango delta, that was really cool, too! Otherwise, we recommend to take your time, rather stay longer at one place, which means you might not get all the way to the Victoria Falls, than travelling every day. The distances are huge! Or you fly back to Windhoek instead of driving all the way through Botswana. We recommend the boat safari on the Chobe river in Botswana though!
Otherwise talk to the guides from Dustyfoot when planning your trip, they are very experienced and should be able to find e travel plan, that matches your expectations.
Have a wonderful tour!
We were never in a dangerous situation together with Svend, it has never been akward with him and during that time, for us he was just a part of our family.
