点评:This enormous opulent and golden temple is a wonderful reminder of the importance of Hinduism for Tamil Sri Lankans.
The back streets of Jaffna contain many Hindu temples from tiny simple buildings to ornate brightly coloured complexes. However the Nallur Temple is the biggest and shiniest of them all.
Whilst Jaffna isn’t a wealthy prosperous town the Hindu devotees have contributed much wealth to this temple, at some cost to themselves no doubt.
We had the good fortune to arrive at the temple at sunset just as a special festival and procession occurred to honour Murugan, son of the God Shiva. His statue was paraded around with trumpets blaring, fire cauldrons burning and hundreds of devotees chanting. A spectacular procession with passionate supporters. The inside of the huge temple was very ornate with many statues and gold pillars.
The swamis accepted offerings whilst some devotees sat and read Hindu books. Well worth visiting as it helps to see the devotion and passion of the temple community,
