点评:We were a little unsure what to do on a rainy Tuesday in south Wales, but we shouldn't have been. You simply MUST visit this attraction. The 50-minute underground tours (people over 1 metre tall only and no pushchairs etc) are free, but you can guarantee a place by paying £5 a head for a JobAKnock ticket (outside of weekends and school holidays I doubt you'd have to queue for more than half an hour if you didn't have a ticket). Parking is also £5 but otherwise everything is free.
It's a high quality attraction with half a dozen different exhibits around the site with detailed explanatory information (the shower block is well worth a visit, as is the King Coal Experience (the closest it comes to a 'museum' style display).
The highlight, however is the underground tour, where a brilliant, friendly and deeply knowledgeable guide takes a party of around 12-15 people down in the cage to 90 metres underground, and takes you around the various tunnels explaining everything from air circulation to horse husbandry and the mining techniques over the centuries. Beware if you have walking difficulties - there are maybe 3 or 4 points where anyone over about 5 foot 4 needs to duck for a while, and one or two where you really have to bend quite a way - although you can easily still go by foot, you're never at risk of crawling, it's not that small. I'm just thinking of those with inflexible backs or knees. You do have to leave at the surface anything that could create a spark - so all cameras, phones, car keys etc. Not a problem but just warn your teens that their phone-limb will need to be temporarily amputated.
Our tour group included three little girls from about 6-10 and their Dad, us visiting from overseas, and some Bristolian teenagers with a couple of adults, and every single one of us was engaged, asking questions, and generally quite entertained. Achieving that with such a diverse group is not an easy feat but our tour guide was so brilliant he achieved it.
In fact all the staff at this place are fantastic - the guys who fit your helmet and lamp are thorough but funny and lighten the task for the little ones. The people in the exhibitions and shops are pleasant and helpful. I honestly could not praise this place more highly.
