点评:On the 44th anniversary of D-Day, French President Francois Mitterrand dedicated a major World War II museum and memorial in Caen, Normandy as an all-inclusive 20th-century historical center.
Located in Caen, Normandy France, the Caen Memorial Museum is one of the largest museums in Europe dedicated to the history of the 20th century. Permanent galleries cover the buildup to World War II, the D-Day landings, the Battle of Normandy, the Holocaust and the Cold War up to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Exhibits range from photos, documents, film and audio guides concentrate on the Nazi’s rise to power, the D-Day landings and battles and life before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Part of the museum is built over an underground German post. The bunker served as the command post for German General Wilhelm Richter to supervise the operations in the event of an invasion. It also housed the switchboard operators and secretaries who worked for the German army. There is a section that focuses mainly on the D-Day landings and Battle of Normandy itself. The Cold War section was recently added and focuses on international tensions, the arms race, and propaganda. There is so much to see and learn that it can become a bit overwhelming if you are on a tour timed schedule.
Outside there are three large gardens around the museum to honor the Allies who died in WW II. The America one opened in 1994, Canadian in 1995 and the British in 2004.There is a full-service restaurant, a Bistro, bookstore and gift shop.
Admission is $23.27 US and audio guides are $5.04. There are discounted rates for students, seniors, residents, and families. The Caen Memorial should be included in everyone’s Normandy
