点评:The highest mountain on the island, so always good to say you made it! It seems to me there are two ways to get there. The shorter and easier route is from the carpark at Achadas do Teixeira. You could manage to walk there and back with decent shoes and average fitness. The more challenging way is the hike from Pico Areeiro. This is a stunning walk but you do need better fitness and some of the steps and pathways are steep and uneven. Do it if you can, though my recommendation is to use a tour company so you have transport that will drop you off and then collect you at the far end. Walking both ways would not be the best plan for most of us! Taxis are possible but expensive, I understand. The final ascent from the Pico Ruivo cafe is the steepest of all. After the long walk from Pico Areeiro, I found it surprisingly tough but, as always in Madeira, the views are amazing.
I walked on a hot clear day. I would recommend carrying drink and probably food. You will probably want some before you reach the cafe, though you can stock up there. On cloudy cooler days I am sure you will need something to keep you warm. On any day you need decent shoes to walk in, trainers will normally be fine.
It is remote but popular. Certainly you are unlikely to have the place to yourself if my experience is anything to go by but it is well worth a visit if you enjoy hiking.
