点评:Call me crazy, but, due to lack of time, I had to choose: to go see the David in the Accademia, or visit San Marco. I picked San Marco, because 1) I already saw 2 David copies in the city, and 2) this was the first actual Catholic monastery that I ever visited. And I was not disappointed, especially because Savonarola, who was the prior here, is a very interesting character who is as prominent in the history of Renaissance Florence as Lorenzo di Medici. I see that some disappointed tourists complain about two things after visiting San Marco, so I will briefly comment on them:
1) "It is not entertaining": come on, guys, it is a monastery! ))
2) "There are only monk's cells": see the Comment #1.
To those who do want to visit, I would recommend to do it on your first day in Florence: looking at Fra Angelico's frescoes you will kind of eye-witness what were the ideological pre-conditions on which the Renaissance grew. Next after that: Capella Branchacci.
