点评：The National AIR and SPACE Museum is part of the Smithsonian Museum wide assembly of Washington DC institutions dedicated to History. The other name for this museum is called: Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
This museum is not located in Washington DC like the others but is located adjacent to Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia.
It is made up of two main halls or as they call them “Hangers”, The first one that you enter is called the “Boeing Aviation Hanger” and from here you can enter the “Space Hanger” or called: James S. McDonnell.
Near the main entrance this museum has a large IMAX Theater, a lovely Museum Gift Shop, an elevator to take you to the Donald D. Engen Observation Tower and a small restaurant.
My grandson and I spent over five hours discovering this fantastic museum, and I must admit we did see over 95% of the exhibits.
In the Boeing Aviation Hanger my favorite five aircraft were the following:
Lockheed SR -71 “Blackbird” (one of the fastest aircraft ever built and was able to fly from New York to Los Angeles in 50 to 55 minutes with an average speed of 2,145 mph or Mach 3.2).
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress called the “Enola Gay”(was the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb in combat, hitting Hiroshima, Japan).
Third the Boeing 307 Stratoliner “Clipper Flying Cloud” (it was first built in 1938 and was the first passenger aircraft that had a pressurized fuselage, I had always loved to be able to fly in one of these iconic passenger aircraft).
Fourth the four engine Lockheed 1049F Super Constellation or called “Super Connie” (again I never flew in a Super Connie, but that had always been my dream, I really loved the triple-tail design):
Finally, the Air France Concorde (again I never flew in this aircraft, but it had been my deep love to have flown in this great aircraft).
In the Space Hanger, hands down, my favorite exhibit was the Space Shuttle “Discovery”. I was very lucky many years ago while in Houston, Texas, I visited the NASA Operational Facility called: Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, I was actually in the Space Shuttle Simulator with a colleague. And now seeing the real Space Shuttle “Discovery” was very a very moving and touching experience for me. It was in service for well over 27 years!
Actually, seeing the actual Mercury Capsule Freedom 7 II was also fascinating, as it was so small especially sitting next to the Space Shuttle!
Overall, this visit to the National AIR and SPACE Museum was one of the top visits of this entire holiday.
