点评:There is nothing I can add to what other reviews have covered in terms of the immersive experience of being in a wonderfully preserved Roman city. However there were a number of factors that made it truly wonderful.
Going in March, a little rain but an entirely comfortable temperature and really quiet.
Going in at 9am, just fewer people. The very friendly and helpful guides in individual bigger houses have time to give you a detailed picture.
Going in at the much quieter entrance near the amphitheatre [about 15 mins walk from Pompei station] rather than the main entrance near the Pompei Scavi station. This requires care in choosing the right train line. That entrance takes you easily into the exhibition of plaster casts which brings home the disaster it was and then you can follow the main Via dell Abbondanza towards the forum.
