点评:Noboribetsu Onsen is much more than just a hot spring town. It is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area and we spent a full day here without running out of things to do.
We first explored Jigokudani (Hell valley), following several walking trails through the impressive volcanic landscape during 2 hours (foot bath included). Afterwards, we wandered through the "onsen village" itself, which offers many nice souvenir shops, cafés serving delicious sweets and restaurants.
Later, we took the ropeway (6400 yen for 2) to the Noboribetsu Bear Park. Although seeing bears in captivity is always somewhat bittersweet, it was a unique opportunity to observe so many playful cubs. The panoramic views from the top, overlooking Lake Kuttara, were also beautiful.
Getting around was easy. We took a taxi from our ryokan in Kojohama to Noboribetsu onsen (around ¥4,000), then returned by local bus to Noboribetsu Station (¥450 per person) before taking a short taxi ride back to our hotel (around ¥1,200).
