点评:Must visit in Lisbon.
First, the logistics: you have to buy tickets for Cloisters, church visit is free, and have to queue separately for church and cloisters. The ticket office is across the street. So potentially three lines: first for the tickets and you get timed entry, and after for the church, and again for cloisters in the line that is specifically for your time. A bit confusing, and keep in time the closing time for the church. Lines can be very long, but moving quickly.
Now to the essence: the monastery complex is very large. The church is impressive in itself, solemn and massive, and of course the tomb of Vasco de Gama is there. The tomb of poet Camões is across and the statue and love of Camões is tremendous in Portugal. The cloisters are really stunning, just amazing workmanship, Manueline style: incorporating ropes, knots and sea faring elements into columns. There are also tomb to famous poet and writers.
Adjacent to the church is the museum of the sea navigation, which is absolutely amazing and appropriately in the wing of monastery. This museum requires at least 2 hours, so maybe a separate visit or all day in Belem: morning in the monastery, lunch in the Pasteis de Belem and museum de Marinha in the afternoon.
Cannot miss any of these sites!
