点评:The Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna is one of the world's greatest, but doesn't get the respect that the Louvre, Prado, Uffizi or the Met gets. Maybe it's because of the name which suggests it might be a history museum when in fact it's primarily an art gallery. In one way this is a good thing because it doesn't get the throngs of visitors that the others do.
Purpose built to host the vast collections amassed by the Hapsburg Dynasty over hundreds of years, it features some of the best Spanish and Flemish art to be found anywhere, reflecting the fact that the Hapsburg's ruled Spain and the Low Countries for much of their reign.
There are literally hundreds of great works on display, but the ones that attract the most people are the works of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. All told there are 12 of his works on display here, the most of any collection in the world. They do not disappoint and if these were the only things you saw, the trip would be worth it. I've attached pictures of a few of them.
My suggestion is to go for the opening and head straight for them and you might have them to yourself for at least a little while. After that you can enjoy the many great woks of other artists on display. Of note for me were the famous Arcimboldo faces made from different objects, Cranach's Adam & Eve and Marie Vigee Lebrun's portrait of Marie Antoinette.
