Lots of fun, but be prepared!
Sand Dunes Recreation Hot Springs Pool的点评
点评:The Great Sand Dunes are quite a sight! It’s amazing to see all that sand between high desert flat lands and mountains. Sledding/boarding the dunes is a lot of fun and so is just sitting on the sand and taking in the views. Some tips for newcomers:
1. Go early—even by 10/11 am the sand is pretty hot in the spring and summer.
2. Rent boards from a local shop. Spindrift was great and a good option if you are staying in Fort Garland or Blanca.
3. Wax the boards up after a couple runs. It really helps you go down.
4. Be prepared for a long walk from the parking to the bottom of the dunes—about 1/2 mile through sand.
5. Bring a backpack to carry extra waters and snacks. You won’t want to make that walk back to your car until it’s time to leave!
6. Wear close toed shoes if it’s summertime. I wore sandals and my feet got really hot in the sand by the time we left.
7. Be prepared for how much harder it is to climb a sand hill compared to a snowy hill. It’s a lot of work and can be slow going!
8. Bring a buff to cover your face if needed. It was not too windy the day we went but we still had sand whipping at us. The winds come off the mountains and across the flat lands there—even if it’s not windy in areas outside the park.
9. Sunglasses or goggles are really wise to protect your eyes.
Definitely something everyone should see and do at least once!
