Second Favorite Romanesque Church out of 6 We Saw
St. Maria im Kapitol的点评
点评：Since Medieval times, Cologne has been known for its 12 Romanesque churches. During our one day stay in the city on a river cruise, we got to see the 6 closest to the river, and of those, this was the second-best interior. St. Maria im Kapitol was one of the larger churches we saw. Unlike Gross St. Martin, its exterior is not impressive, but its interior is beautiful Romanesque stonework.
All 6 of the churches we visited were great visits and totally free. All were also built around the 9th-11th centuries when Romanesque was the dominate architecture. In addition to its rounded arches, it has heavy walls and smaller windows, all functions of this style. However, where some are more basic, Santa Maria im Kapitol has a 3-apse sanctuary behind its stone choir screen which are all beautiful gathering spaces. The Nave is more basic but still a beautiful setting.
The best thing is St. Maria im Kapitol opens at 9:00 which is after most cruises arrive but before many of the other sights like the museums. This way you can visit before the museums open. The other good thing is we saw St. Maria im Kapitol, St. Georg's and St. Maria in Lyskirchen all before the Chocolate Museum opened at 10:00. The other benefit is that the crowds were light and we nearly had all three churches to ourselves.
While I like all the Romanesque churches we saw, this was my second favorite due to its size and beautiful stonework. If you are limited by time, I think this is a good one to see. It is also close to the riverfront where the cruises dock. All this combines to make this a great attraction to see while you are in Cologne.
