点评:One of Cologne's tourists highlights since the Middle Ages has been its 12 Romanesque churches. We were able to see 6 during our one day visit and I would highly encourage you to visit as many as you can. However, if you can only get to one, this is the one to visit as it is the oldest (truly Roman), most interesting architecture, most colorful and most beautiful of all the Romanesque churches.
The main body of the church is a decagon that dates back to the 4th century when Cologne was a Roman Rhine outpost, and it has been a church since the 6th century. The primary nave and sanctuary extend off the decagon with a Romanesque apse. On the exterior the apse is flanked by two towers and shows off its Romanesque features. However, the real highlight is the decagon, 10 amazing stone sides covered by three levels of arches and incredible stained-glass windows. For me, the decagon is a highlight for our Cologne visit, both in beauty and architecture space, along with the Cathedral.
I would make this a priority to see while you are in Cologne. A good way to see it is before or after you visit the Cathedral. It is exactly a kilometer or 0.6 miles from the Cathedral. We ran it to get back for our Cathedral tour. Lastly, the church is free admission to see, and we had it almost entirely to ourselves with no crowds.
