Windmills, Cheese & Clogs: Our Day at Zaanse Schans

点评：We visited Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam and had a fantastic day out. We first made a quick stop at the famous Intel Hotel Zaandam (the "Lego House" hotel) to admire its unique architecture before catching the train onwards to Zaanse Schans. The journey was easy and straightforward from Amsterdam Centraal.
From Zaandijk Zaanse Schans Station, it's less than a 15-minute walk to the windmill village. On our way there, the bridge was lifted to allow a boat to pass through, which was really nice to watch and added to the Dutch experience. There weren't many signs pointing towards the village, but it was easy enough to find by simply following the crowds.
The area is well-equipped for visitors, with cafés, restaurants, picnic areas, and toilet facilities along the route. One thing to note is that the public toilets are card payment only, so make sure you have a bank card with you as cash isn't accepted.
The windmill village itself is beautiful and feels like stepping back in time. There are several traditional Dutch windmills to admire, and some are still working today. We paid €7 to go inside one of the windmills, which was very interesting as you can see how the machinery operates. However, be aware that the stairs are extremely steep and narrow. Younger children should be closely supervised, and visitors with mobility issues may find it difficult to access the upper levels.
One of the highlights for us was the clog-making workshop. It was fascinating to watch how traditional Dutch clogs are made, and there was a huge selection on display. We couldn't resist buying a pair ourselves, although we chose the fabric-style clogs rather than the traditional wooden version, thinking they'd be perfect for the autumn and winter months.
The cheese shops were another favourite stop. There were plenty of free samples, allowing visitors to try a wide variety of Dutch cheeses before buying. Unfortunately, due to UK import restrictions, we chose not to bring any cheese home, but we did buy a cheese slicer and grater, which we're looking forward to using.
There are also plenty of souvenir shops selling local crafts, Delftware, Dutch sweets, magnets, and other gifts. The area feels very tourist-friendly while still offering a glimpse of Dutch history and culture.
A useful tip we received from one of the shop owners was to stay alert for pickpockets and people pretending to be police officers. We didn't experience any problems ourselves, but it's always wise to keep an eye on your belongings in busy tourist areas.
To finish off the visit, we treated ourselves to some ice cream, which was delicious and a perfect way to end the day. The village is also very photogenic, with beautiful canals, traditional green wooden houses, grazing animals, and stunning views of the windmills, making it an excellent spot for photography.
Overall, Zaanse Schans is definitely worth visiting if you're looking for a traditional Dutch experience outside Amsterdam. The windmills, clog workshop, cheese tasting, and scenic surroundings make for a fun and memorable day trip suitable for families, couples, and visitors of all ages.
