点评:If you're visiting the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle, don't make the mistake of overlooking its lesser-known neighbor, Schloss Hohenschwangau. Sitting just across the valley, this beautiful yellow castle is every bit as charming and historically significant.
Built by King Maximilian II of Bavaria, Hohenschwangau served as the childhood home of his son, King Ludwig II, who would later go on to build Neuschwanstein. Knowing that the future "Fairy Tale King" grew up here gives the castle a special place in Bavarian history.
My two kiddos (ages 11 & 14) and I were pleasantly surprised by how magnificent the castle is. While Neuschwanstein often steals the spotlight, Hohenschwangau has a warmth and authenticity all its own. Surrounded by mountains, forests, and lakes, the setting is absolutely stunning.
Even if you don't have the time, energy, or budget for another castle tour, I highly recommend visiting the grounds (for FREE). Walk up to the castle (short walk uphill from the parking lot), stroll through the beautiful courtyard, admire the architecture, and take in the spectacular views of the surrounding Alps and nearby lakes. The approach to the castle alone is worth the short climb--at least I felt the way up was a bit steeper than expected, whereas my kiddos where just jumping ahead with easy. Let's blame it on the July heat that day.
What I especially appreciated was that Hohenschwangau feels a bit more relaxed and less crowded than its famous neighbor (even on a busy summer day). You can take your time, enjoy the scenery, and imagine what life might have been like for the young prince who dreamed of building the fairytale castle visible on the hill above. While I was sitting on a bench underneath a tree and dreaming, my kiddos enjoyed the many water fountains and getting their hands wet on this very hot summer day.
For us, Schloss Hohenschwangau turned out to be much more than a side attraction. It was a beautiful destination in its own and added valuable context to everything we learned about King Ludwig II.
So if you're heading to Neuschwanstein, make sure to spend a little time with its "little brother" Hohenschwangau. You'll be rewarded with magnificent views, fascinating history, and one of the most picturesque castle settings in all of Germany.
