点评:This review is only for the Monday evening bellringing practice at St. Anne's, which we learned about at the Alderney Visitor Office. Bottom line up front: our evening in the bell tower was, in a word, wonderful. After circling the church we determined that access to the stairs was from the parking lot, so we ascended the spiral staircase not knowing what to expect. On poking our heads into the bell ringing room we were greeted warmly by Helen, who asked: “are you bellringers?” “Um, not really,” we replied, but explained that one of us has the responsibility of tolling a single bell some Sunday mornings at our place of worship in Ottawa, Canada. “No worries,” she replied. “I’ll help you understand the mechanics of the process in short order.” St. Anne’s has 12 bells, and proudly holds a world record for pealing them for 16 hours. Indeed, the six bellringers at practice impressed us with their skill and discipline. Two hours were gone in a flash (with a mid-practice tea and treats break, of course) and we received some one-on-one coaching, as well as a tour of the impressive belfry over our heads. As visitors and complete newbies to campanology (we looked up the word), we were welcomed enthusiastically. If this opportunity ever presents itself to you, it comes with our highest recommendation.
