点评:This is a unique experience. It is weather dependent so allow some extra time at Mt. Cook in case of inclement weather. My original Glacier Explorers trip was cancelled due to wind and pouring rain. I was luckily able to book for the following day.
We took a bus to the car park and then walked a mile to the jetty. Tasman Lake was formed in the late 1980s when bits of ice from the Tasman Glacier melted and expanded the kettle lake. The lake is now quite huge, with icebergs floating in it. It is similar to Lake Jökulsárlón in Iceland. Anyway, the lake comes with a warning. Before we started exploring, we had a safety briefing.
We boarded small boats that held about 10-12 people and started to explore the icebergs. There are many icebergs in the lake. We got up close to several of them.
One iceberg had scalloped ice that made it look a bit like bubble wrap. Another iceberg had flipped over just two hours before we visited it.
After exploring the icebergs, we then went to see the Tasman Glacier, the largest in New Zealand. The Tasman Glacier face was ready for its close-up. Note the "dirt" on top of the glacier. This glacier is, to quote Tallulah Bankhead, "pure as the driven slush". Our guide took photos of each of us holding a small iceberg with the Tasman Glacier in the background. I used one of the photos as my holiday card this year! (All Santa brought me was a lump of ice!)
