点评:A short walk from the abbey stands a simple stone structure that is St Oran’s Chapel. St Oran’s Chapel is the oldest visible structure on Iona today. However, it was built at least 600 years after the time of St Columba and St Oran.
The St Oran’s Chapel that stands on Iona now dates from about the third quarter of the 12th century.
As with many old buildings this also has a somewhat gruesome legend attached. During the construction of the chapel the story goes that what was built during the day was destroyed at night. In old biblical time the burying alive of a scarifice was well known, and so St Columba buried St Oran under the chapel. There is no evidence to support this story, except perhaps the face in the abbey choir area. which is though to represent St Oran's face of terror on discovering what the afterlife was like.
Ture or not it adds to the mystic of these old buildings.
The Chapel also has it's own grave yard within which are buried many old Kings of Scotland and Norway and well worth a wander round.
