点评:This was a wonderful surprise, tucked away in an unpromising position behind the motorway (mostly unnoticeable once you are inside). If without car, well worth a taxi or the direct bus to the entrance. There is a lot to see - plan on 2-3 hours, or longer if you bring a book and settle in one of the many quiet spots.
This is a big and well-kept garden. There's no guide for the visitors, so I photographed the garden map for navigation. It would be easy to miss some of the key sites, particularly the splendid house at the top, with its courtyard garden, and the excellent botanical exhibitions in the old stables. These explain the rich botanical history of the gardens since the mid-19th century.
Bearing left from the entrance, visit the lakes, peek at the fruit garden for the rare ensete trees from Ethiopia, climb up the hill to the Gazebo and admire the pool. Walk through the succulent (cacti)garden, admire the palm avenue, then dip into the very shady valley garden and (small) waterfall. Stroll to the mansion and circumnavigate the arboretum beyond. Really, there is a lot to see, with all the plants labelled. On a Saturday we mostly had the gardens to ourselves, but found a few more people when we returned to the exit where the cafe was well stocked with pasties and salad.
