点评:The medieval Church of St Étienne is stop #3 on Chinon’s ‘Historic Town Walk’.
We picked up a free map of the trail from the local Tourist Information Centre. The whole walk only takes about an hour (if you’re speedy, you could do it in much less).
St Étienne’s was open and, like all of the churches, it was free to enter.
It's only a brief stop, but there are some lovely stained glass windows biblical scenes as well as other scenes from local history. One scene depicts the 6th century meeting of St Radegonde and the hermit, St Jean de Chinon. Later we walked up to see the cave-like chapel where they actually met.
The ornate pulpit with its carved wooden staircase also caught my eye. If you stop to take a look, you’ll see a winged dragon with a ridged back and a long tongue curling itself around the first post of the handrail.
The most prominent feature inside the church is the large marble state of Joan of Arc, located near the entrance on the left. You can't visit Chinon without tripping over references to Joan because Chinon was where she famously met Charles VII in 1429. The sculpture here shows her bare-legged, wearing a simple tunic dress, with a sword by her side. It was interesting to compare this to the aggressively warrior-like statue at Place Jeanne d’Arc. In contrast that state shows her as a fierce warrior, in full armour and riding her horse over the bodies of her enemies.
