点评:I love stumbling on places like this when I travel. The Straddling reflects the eagle eye of the late Ken Straddling, who worked for and ultimately directed the Bristol Guild over 60 years. While building the shop's network of artisans, artists, and suppliers from the UK and Europe (especially Scandinavia), Straddling amassed his own collection of exemplary pieces that make up the collection here.
Move heaven and earth to sign up for one of the Saturday tours given twice monthly by curator Tanya Martin. She worked with Straddling and enthusiastically rattles off stories about seemingly everything in view (including the building itself). We hear a lot about "storytelling" these days, but the stories behind the objects really bring them alive. One surprising theme, represented by multiple objects, is the bond that local furniture manufacturer Crofton Gane forged with the influential modernist architect/designer/Bauhaus instructor Marcel Breuer.
Two unexpected pluses: a warmly welcoming staff, and the fact that you can actually hold and examine almost any object on display. Try that at the V&A—or any museum.
Beyond great design, the Collection provides a non-touristic glimpse into Bristol history during much of the 20th century. This low-key, uncrowded venue seems like an essential ingredient in Bristol's thriving art/design community. The term "under the radar" was practically invented for this place.
