Let’s be honest: everyone comes to Granada for the Alhambra, and everyone should. I visited twice within twelve hours during my four-week rail journey through Europe – the night visit to the Nasrid Palaces at 22.00 and the first morning slot at 8.30 the next day – and those two visits felt like two entirely different palaces. At night the stucco walls float in lamplight, the fountains are the loudest sound in the courtyards, and the Court of the Myrtles turns into a black mirror. In the morning the low sun climbs slowly down the walls of the Comares Tower, the air is still cool, and the Generalife gardens smell of water and box hedge. You cannot choose between these two experiences. Have both.
THE PIED PIPER INVASION AT 10.30
Here is the most useful thing I can tell you. Every single day at around 10.30 the tour buses arrive, and busloads of people pour through the gates following their guides’ raised umbrellas and lollipop signs like the rats following the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The atmosphere changes completely in about fifteen minutes. Between 8.30 and 10.15 I shared the Court of the Lions with a few dozen quiet people; by eleven it was a procession. So my two recommendations are simple: book the first morning entry at 8.30, or the night visit at 22.00 in summer – ideally both.
SKIP THE GUIDED TOURS
I do not recommend joining a guided tour here, and I say this having originally booked one. A group tour marches you through on the guide’s schedule, and the one thing the Alhambra demands is the opposite: time to sit down on a cool stone bench, stare at a muqarnas ceiling until your eyes adjust to its depth, and simply marvel at the splendour. No commentary is worth losing that. Buy an ordinary timed entry ticket, go at your own pace, and read up beforehand – the palace rewards silence, not headsets.
TICKETS: THE HARD TRUTH
Book months ahead, and use only the official Alhambra y Generalife website. I could not, because my plan came together while already travelling – and I paid for it dearly. Official night entry costs 12 euros at the ticket office; through resellers I paid many times that, and one operator even cancelled the “guided” part of my night visit six and a half hours before the start and turned out to be little better than a scam. Both visits still succeeded, but spare yourself the drama: official site, months ahead, first morning slot and the summer night slot.
