点评:The East Side Gallery is undeniably one of Berlin’s most important and symbolic sights. Walking alongside the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall is a sobering experience, and seeing the famous “My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love” mural of the two men kissing in person is genuinely striking. It’s an image you’ve seen countless times in books and online, but standing in front of it carries real historical weight.
That said, the overall experience is a bit mixed. While the artwork itself is meaningful, much of the wall isn’t well preserved. Several sections are faded, damaged, or covered in graffiti, which detracts from the impact and makes it feel neglected in places rather than respectfully protected.
Lighting is also an issue. Visiting later in the day or towards evening, parts of the gallery are poorly lit, making it harder to fully appreciate the murals or take photos without shadows. For something of such global significance, it deserves better presentation. Travelling from Alexanderplatz to the wall by foot highlighted potential safety issues if alone. It didn’t appear safe and there were many homeless and addition issues present around the area.
Still, it’s absolutely worth visiting for the history alone. Just go in knowing that it feels more raw and worn than polished — powerful, yes, but also a reminder that this site could be cared for far better than it currently is.
Worth seeing once, especially for the iconic murals, but manage expectations.
