点评:I really enjoyed visiting King John’s Castle in Limerick. Duillean, one of the guides working in the courtyard, was especially memorable. He was very friendly and had a really engaging way of explaining the history without making it feel like a formal lecture.
One thing I found funny was learning about King John himself. I knew the name from the castle, but I had completely forgotten that he was the villain in the Robin Hood stories! Duillean explained the connection and then went on to talk about the history of Limerick, the Norman period, the Vikings, religious conflicts, and the different groups of people who have shaped the city over the centuries. I was also particularly surprised to hear about the conflict with William of Orange and its place in Limerick’s history.
He was also happy to answer questions, play Peg’s Nim with visitors, and recommend other places to visit around Limerick and Ireland. What stood out most was how enthusiastic he was about the history. He really has a way of making it feel alive rather than something you’re just reading on a sign. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Limerick.
