Pleasant Excursion to Les Glénans on a Sunny Spring Day

点评：There is one sailing per day to the Iles Glénan in April, so our boat was full to capacity and the bench seats were quite hard on the bottom! It surprised me that dogs were allowed on the trip given the environmental vulnerability of the islands, but considerate owners kept them on leads. The 1 hour 15 minutes crossing to St Nicholas (the main island) was choppy and cold, so although we had paid €49 each for the guided tour around the other islands, we decided to stay put on St Nicholas. We didn’t want to spend another hour feeling chilly at sea, especially given the long return journey. Plus, the English-speaking version of the tour was very difficult to understand over the noise of the engine. If we’d been sensible we’d have saved our money and just paid €39 pp to stay on St Nicholas, which is a pretty place in the late-Spring sunshine, with the white sand gleaming and wild flowers in bloom. We love islands and often include a boat trip when we visit the coast, but overall, this trip to the Glénans left us underwhelmed. We were none the wiser about the lives of the people who live there, or who might have settled in the past. Perhaps some information boards would have helped. On the plus side, St Nicholas was not too crowded on this out-of-season visit, which meant we could relax with a beer at La Boucane before our return sailing. We saw a few seals, swallows, terns and gannets, which was fun, and enjoyed the feeling of remoteness. However, I cannot imagine how this tiny landmass can accommodate the tourist hoards that descend there in the summer. Would we go again? Probably not. But it ticked a box on week-long holiday in Brittany.
