点评:I got to experience the Glendalough Monastic Settlement guided walking tour as part of my Irish Adventure tour run by CIE Tours (you can read my review of the amazing Irish Adventure tour on CIE’s TripAdvisor page). I am so delighted that I got to visit Glendalough.
Founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin, Glendalough (“valley of the two lakes”) was once a thriving center of learning, prayer, and pilgrimage. Walking through the ruins, it’s easy to imagine what life might have been like in this early monastic “city,” with its iconic round tower and stone churches still standing strong.
What makes this place especially fascinating is that its history is anything but quiet: raided by Vikings, fought over by rival clans, and shaped by the story of St. Kevin himself, a hermit who reportedly lived on a cliff and allowed birds to nest in his hands. Ireland truly doesn’t do boring history.
Beyond the history, the setting is just as memorable. The ancient stone arches marking the entrance, the peaceful sounds of songbirds, and even spotting a male Common chaffinch added to the experience. The landscape was dotted with bright yellow Common gorse, which blooms nearly year-round and is said to smell faintly of coconut. I loved learning the old Irish saying: “When gorse goes out of bloom, kissing will go out of fashion.”
This was a beautiful and peaceful start to the day, rich in history, nature, and a bit of Irish legend.
