Our private Douro Valley excursion with Ulisses Barros of Portugal Private Tours was truly one of the most memorable days of our trip to Portugal. From the planning stages to the moment he dropped us back at our hotel, Ulisses went above and beyond to create an experience that felt completely tailored to the four of us.
Before we even arrived in Portugal, we met with Ulisses via Google Meet to discuss exactly what we were looking for. He listened to our interests and designed the perfect itinerary. On the day of our tour, he picked us up in a spacious, comfortable Mercedes van and immediately made us feel like we were spending the day with a knowledgeable local friend. He is friendly, outgoing, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable about all things Portugal. Throughout the day, he shared fascinating information and gave us countless recommendations for restaurants, foods to try, and places to visit during the rest of our trip.
Our first winery, Quinta da Vacaria, absolutely took our breath away. The gorgeous grounds overlooking the Douro River were spectacular, and the entire experience felt luxurious and special. We were fortunate to tour their impressive, state-of-the-art facility with the wonderful Laura, who made the visit even more memorable. This was the perfect introduction to the Douro Valley, combining breathtaking scenery, exceptional wine, and warm Portuguese hospitality.
From there, Ulisses took us to Quinta da Fonte do Milho, a small local farm that offered a completely different—and equally incredible—experience. We met the owner, Nuno Gonzalez, who personally taught us about his winemaking process and shared his wines with us in the most charming, intimate surroundings. We then enjoyed a private lunch prepared for us right on the farm. By the time we left, we genuinely felt as though we had been welcomed into someone’s home as family. It was authentic, personal, and something we never could have experienced on a typical large-group tour. This stop gave us a wonderful glimpse into the traditions, passion, and personal connections behind local Portuguese winemaking.
Our final stop wasn’t even planned, which perfectly illustrates what makes Ulisses so special. He noticed how intrigued we had become by Vinho Verde and spontaneously suggested stopping at Quinta da Aveleda on our way back. Although we arrived too late for a tasting, we explored the stunning property—it honestly felt like we had stepped into the scenery of Hansel and Gretel—and picked up several bottles and other goodies before heading back to Porto. This unexpected visit was the perfect way to end the day, allowing us to discover another beautiful Portuguese wine region and experience a completely different landscape and atmosphere.
