点评：The city of Amsterdam was born when the Amstel River was dammed here in order to provide measures for flood control and to divert water to the Singel to form a defensive moat around the city. The Dam Square is the site of that original dam and the original open space for the city center. Here many important civic and commercial properties developed like the New Church, Nieuwe Kerk, the City Hall, that became the Koninklijk (Royal Palace), and the Damrak. It is also a central gathering for the Dutch people where they recognized national events, like the cenotaph National Monument. It is likely a place you will visit when you go to any of these important Amsterdam sights. However, even if you don't plan to visit those specific sights, you should make a point to visit as it is free and perhaps the best place to experience Amsterdam.
We had a chance to cross it several times in short stays and see several sights including the Royal Palace (amazing), New Church (great visit) and the National Monument. While I am sure there are times of the day when you can visit the Square when few people are there, this is one of the most important public spaces in the city, so it is likely to be crowded. The day of our visit there was a children's soccer tournament taking places, so people were everywhere but also actively engaged in civic use. To really experience Amsterdam, you must visit Dam Square.
